MattingExperts.com Corp. introduces anti-fatigue mat selection for workstations, food service and recessed entrance floors. New selection includes solid surface soft mats as well as solid rubber mats with holes to facilitate drainage and keep employees from slipping and falling as well as to give legs and feet comfort.

Here are some guidelines how to navigate the new anti fatigue inventory and choose the right product:
Chose mat(s) that are most appropriate to the given situation based on three key components:
  • Comfort
  • Drainage
  • Quality Comfort - The thicker the mat, the more comfortable it will be. Mats at least 7/8” thick are the best choice for work stations requiring an employee to stay there for an entire work shift. Thicker mats are not that great for using in entryways as they can be a tripping hazard. A ˝” thick mat would do fine for an entire shift also but is more suited to areas with extended use as opposed to constant use. Mats that are 3/8” thick are recommended for areas of traffic as they are lower profile making them less likely to be reason for tripping. Thinner mats are also more affordable allowing larger areas to be covered within a budget.

Drainage - Consider presence of liquids at the location. In an area such as the dish room or pasta station, water will likely be spilled quite often and may even create a standing pool from time to time. For this type of application a full drainage mat will be needed. This means the mat has generously sized holes allowing run-off and knobs on the underside to help aerate and facilitate flow toward drains. In areas that are not as prone to excessive amounts of water, a moderate draining mat will do just fine. This type of mat has smaller and fewer drainage holes. Those mats can be used in entrances with the recessed area. This is quite appropriate application as long as entrance is not going to be used by people wearing high heels. Where high heels are worn a more standard entry rug or another commercial entrance rug solution with denser surface must be considered.

Quality - When it comes to commercial drainage mats, the level of quality is defined by the composition of the material that makes the mat. For example, mats that will be exposed to grease and oil will need to be a higher quality than those that will only be exposed to water or other non-caustic liquids. In this case, quality is measured by the presence of Nitrile rubber compound. Nitrile rubber is, “A synthetic rubber specifically designed for harsh environments providing superior oil, grease, animal fat, and chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, gas permeability and thermal stability” (Superior Manufacturing Group, Inc.). Red drainage mats usually contain the highest level of Nitrile material classifying them as ‘grease proof' while mats in black color have less (or do not have any) Nitrile compound and are classified as ‘grease resistant'.
